Shifting

Leah left her home for the last time and went back to college. She was sad and reluctant to leave. She loves Minnesota.

Someone recently shared with me that their in-laws live in the Phoenix area. She said, "It's hot, but life just shifts." And even though she probably meant that people adjust to the heat and shift how they live the same way we shift how we live during our extreme winters here, I haven't stopped thinking about her phrase "life just shifts." So many times, people talk about "change" and how hard and scary it is and how it makes everything different in your life. Change feels negative even though it's often a positive thing overall. But shifting? I love that word and idea. Life just shifts, not necessarily bad or good, just different. We're doing a whole lot of shifting this year...job changes, moves (Colby and us), graduations, no more high school schedules and activities and sports, kids have all officially grown up and our roles will be different now, a mission, and on and on. Change feels too hard, ...... but shifting? We can do that. We can shift into whatever's next.
